Partnership Aims to Reduce Apartment Fires

November 26, 2013 (SPRINGFIELD, Mo) Affiniti Management Services has partnered with the Springfield Fire Department to provide education and approved smoking receptacles to their residents in an effort to reduce the risk of an apartment fire.  On Saturday, November 30th at 1:30 p.m. the Springfield Fire Department will visit two Affiniti managed properties, The Villages at Nathanael Greene and Tall Grass Apartments to provide residents with fire safety information.

In the last 10 years, the Springfield Fire Department has responded to nearly 400 fires in apartment buildings across the city.  Fires caused by careless smoking, open-flames from BBQ grills and grease fires have displaced thousands of residents and have resulted in injuries and deaths that could have been avoided.  Properties with balconies and patio areas are at a greater risk of fire due to smoking and grilling and are the focus of the recent partnership.  According to the Springfield Fire Department, careless smoking fires in Springfield are 10 times the national average and the number one cause of fire fatalities in Springfield.

“We are very conscious of the potential danger to our residents” says Lonnie Funk, President of Affiniti Management.  “We are pleased to partner with the Springfield Fire Department to help reduce this risk and keep our residents safe.”

Affiniti Management has added an addendum to their leasing agreement outlining a new limited smoking policy for all of their properties which requires residents to use an approved smoking urn on patios and balconies to help reduce fires caused by improperly disposed of cigarettes and cigars. The Springfield Fire Department will educate residents on proper disposal of smoking material, proper placement of BBQ grills, cooking safety and other home fire hazards.

The Villages at Nathanael Greene is located at 1950 S. Scenic Ave.  Tall Grass Apartments is located at 1029 W. Battlefield Rd.
